ABOUT
M
ARIAN MURPHY POWELL

Marian is an accomplished singer and theatrical artist who brings a solid foundation in classical music to her work on stage.  A veteran of national tours, major regional productions, symphony and concert performances, Marian combines dynamic singing and compelling acting in her various cabaret shows and other guest artist appearances.  She has performed professionally in many major theatrical productions some of her roles include:  “Cosette” in LES MISERABLES, “Christine” in PHANTOM,  “ Mother” in BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY”, “Marian” in THE MUSIC MAN, “Fleur” in the premiere of ESMERALDA, “Mary Jane Wilkes “ in BIG RIVER and “Fiona” in BRIGADOON, to name a few.

 Her
first solo CD, “This Must Be Love” includes her favorite love songs, ranging from the fun to the romantic, and illustrates the many facets of love. In keeping with the diversity of the subject, Marian shows great versatility and range with each song and adds her own ingredient as a storyteller. She has a very rich, clear tone and her calming style is evident in such songs as My Grown-Up Christmas List, When October Goes and Seeing For the Very First Time. She adds a hint of soft jazz in all the right places to bring something new to such previous hits as We’re All Alone and This Must Be Love. After hearing Mark Gasbarro’s lush piano arrangement, her favorite song on the CD is I Won’t Last A Day Without You. Mark Gasbarro, a Los Angeles based 'A' list studio player, arranger and composer deepened the musical and technical merit of this project with his multi-dimensional talents.  The result of Mark and Marian’s collaboration is an eclectic mix of styles, colors and range that will hold the listener captive.

“Live At the Saturday Club”, Marian’s second CD, is a collaboration with legendary jazz pianist Bill Schmearer.  Featuring such jazz classics as My Funny Valentine, How High the Moon, Easy to Love, and many more, it is a live celebration of a timeless tradition and genre.  With Bill Butler on drum set and Fred Weiss on bass, the combo takes you on a trip through America’s favorite jazz songbook; from Porter to Gershwin, from Mancini to Mercer, you’ll hear treasures from every decade.

As a cabaret performer, Marian has sung treasured musical theatre classics to today's Broadway and cabaret hits on stages throughout the U.S. and England. "Amazed By You", a third CD of original love songs, was written for Marian by composer Matthew Quayle. Each piece is an individual and eclectic look at the complexities of love and gives Marian the opportunity to shine from both a musical and theatrical perspective.

Marian has been privileged to perform the one-act liturgical musical EARLY ONE MORNING, based upon the Resurrection story, as seen through the eyes of Mary Magdalene.  Audiences throughout the U.S. have been left spell-bound by the moving presentation of Ron Melrose’s music and lyrics.

She has been featured with several orchestras around the world, including the SHANGHAI SYMPHONY from China in a tribute to the Prime Minister of Singapore, and the CONCORDIA ORCHESTRA at New York’s Lincoln Center. She has been a soloist in many other venues as well, such as: cruise lines, theme parks, dinner theatres and benefits.

Marian holds a Bachelor of Music degree with a Performer’s Certificate from the School of Music at the State University of New York in Fredonia.  She is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA) and National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
